octanorm alternatives: what your options actually are.
We represent Octanorm, so read this with that in mind. It is still worth writing, because a modular aluminium system is genuinely the wrong purchase for some exhibitors, and finding that out after the invoice is expensive. Here is what the alternatives are, what each one is good at, and the specific cases where we would tell you not to buy a system at all.

first: when a modular system is the wrong tool
A modular system earns its price through reuse. You buy the profiles once, then assemble a different stand from the same parts for years. That arithmetic only works if there is a second and a third appearance. For a company exhibiting once, at one fair, with no plan to return, the system is the expensive option and something built or rented for that one show is cheaper.
It is also the wrong tool when the stand has to be a shape the system cannot make. Modular means a grid: straight runs, right angles, standard heights, panels in fixed widths. Curves, sculptural forms, a shell shaped like the product itself, or a two-storey structure with an unusual footprint are all easier to build once out of timber than to force out of a profile grid.
And it is wrong when nobody will store it. Profiles, panels and crates need dry storage between fairs and someone to check them back in. An exhibitor with no warehouse and no logistics contact ends up paying storage fees that erase the reuse saving.

- Curved, sculptural or non-grid geometry: a bespoke build is usually cheaper and better.
- No storage and no one to manage it: the reuse saving disappears into storage costs.
- Very small budget for a very small stand: rental removes the capital outlay entirely.
A modular system is a poor purchase for a single appearance and a very good one from roughly the third appearance onward, because the cost is spread across every reuse.
bespoke joinery: built once, for exactly one shape
A joinery stand is carpentry. Timber and MDF are cut, assembled and painted to a drawing, so the shape is unlimited: curves, recesses, integrated furniture, a facade that looks like nothing else in the hall. If the brief is a stand nobody has seen before, this is the honest answer, and no modular system will match it.
The cost sits in the fact that it is made once. Design, cutting, finishing and transport are paid in full for a single show, and afterwards the structure is usually scrapped, because dismantling painted panels rarely leaves anything reusable. The second fair starts the whole cost again from zero.
It is also the slowest option on site. A joinery stand goes up with tools, fixings and touch-up paint, so build-up needs more hours and more access than a system stand, which matters when the organiser sells build-up time by the day.
- Best for: unlimited geometry, one flagship appearance, a brand-defining shape.
- Worst for: recurring exhibitors, tight build-up windows, anyone counting cost per appearance.
fabric frame systems: fast graphics, limited structure
A fabric frame system is a light aluminium frame with a printed textile stretched into a groove around its edge. The graphic goes up in minutes with no tools, the printed panels fold into a bag rather than a crate, and reprinting a wall for a new message costs a fraction of repainting one. For a stand that is mostly large images, this is genuinely quicker and cheaper to ship than anything rigid.
The limit is that a textile frame is a graphic carrier, not a structure. It does not want shelves bolted to it, a counter hanging off it, a heavy screen cantilevered from it, or a second floor above it. Once the stand has to hold weight, the fabric frame stops being enough and something load-bearing has to appear behind it.
The two are not mutually exclusive, which is the practical point: a load-bearing profile skeleton with fabric infill is a common and sensible combination, and it is why the choice is rarely one system against another.
- Best for: image-led stands, frequent graphic changes, low shipping weight.
- Worst for: shelving, heavy fittings, suspended loads, anything structural.
truss and rigging: spans and things hung overhead
Truss is a lattice of aluminium tubes, built for span and for load hung underneath it. If the requirement is a wide gateway with nothing underneath, a heavy banner or lighting rig over the stand, or a structure read from across the hall, truss does what a wall system is not designed to do.
It is not a stand on its own. Truss gives you a frame and an overhead structure; the walls, storage, counter and floor still have to come from somewhere else. In practice it is an addition to a stand rather than an alternative to one.
Anything suspended also brings the organiser into the decision. Rigging points, load calculations and hall approval are all controlled by the venue, and the approvals have deadlines well before build-up. That is a scheduling constraint, not a technical one, but it decides more projects than the engineering does.
- Best for: wide spans, overhead lighting and banners, long sight lines.
- Worst for: a complete stand on its own, venues with restrictive rigging rules.
turnkey rental: no purchase, no storage, no ownership
Rental removes the capital decision altogether. The stand arrives, someone else builds it, and after the fair it disappears with them. There is nothing to store, nothing to maintain, no crates to track, and the cost is a single known figure per appearance rather than an investment recovered over years.
What you give up is control and accumulation. The catalogue of available elements is whatever the supplier owns, so a specific dimension or a particular finish may simply not be on offer, and each fair starts again from that same catalogue. Five rentals cost five times one rental, whereas five appearances on owned profiles cost the purchase plus five sets of graphics.
The crossover point is worth calculating rather than assuming, and it usually falls somewhere around the third appearance. Below that, rental is generally the cheaper answer, and we will say so.
- Best for: one to two appearances, no storage, a fixed budget per show.
- Worst for: annual exhibitors, anyone who needs the same recognisable stand each time.
when octanorm is still the right answer
The case for a modular aluminium system is reuse plus availability of parts. The load-bearing maxima profile comes in 40, 80 and 120 millimetre widths, connected through grooves that run the length of the profile, with no welding and no glue. Panels and shelves click in without drilling, an element slides off leaving no mark, and the same profiles come back next year in a different layout.
Because the connection logic is identical across the whole line, the kit grows instead of being replaced. A stand bought at 12 square metres extends to 24 by adding profiles, not by buying a new stand, and a part broken in transit is a catalogue item rather than a remanufacture. That is the real argument, and it is an argument about the fourth and fifth fair, not the first.
Assembly speed follows from the same design. Aluminium is light enough that one fitter erects a large part of the structure, and build-up is measured in hours rather than days, which matters when the venue charges for the hall by the day.

- A stand that must change size and layout between fairs from the same parts.
- Spare parts and extensions available years later, from a catalogue.
- Short build-up windows and small crews.

Each wins in a different situation, and the deciding factor is usually how many times you will exhibit rather than the technology.
For a single appearance, for a shape the profile grid cannot make, and when nobody will store the crates between fairs. In all three cases renting or building for that one show costs less. A system earns its price through reuse, so with no second appearance there is nothing for the cost to spread across.
