exhibition stand for expo 2027: buy or rent.

The organiser builds the EXPO 2027 site in Belgrade (15 May to 15 August 2027); participants and their contractors fit out the pavilion interiors, which must be finished by 31 March 2027. This guide covers who fits out what, what Serbian rules and customs require, and when buying your own Octanorm system beats renting one.

expo 2027 belgrade: the organiser builds, you fit out

EXPO 2027 runs in Belgrade from 15 May to 15 August 2027, 93 days on a 25-hectare site in Surčin, five kilometres from the airport. More than 140 countries and international organisations have confirmed, and the organiser expects over four million visitors. The theme is "Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All".

It is a Specialised Expo under the BIE (Bureau International des Expositions). At a World Expo countries build their own pavilions; at a Specialised Expo the organiser builds the halls and pavilion units, and each participant fits out the space it is given: walls, counters, lighting, graphics and display. Modular systems such as Octanorm are made for exactly that kind of interior.

  • Dates: 15 May to 15 August 2027, 93 days.
  • Venue: Surčin, Belgrade, 25 hectares next to the airport.
  • Scale: more than 140 participants and over four million visitors (organiser figures).
  • Type: BIE Specialised Expo, site built by the organiser.
  • Theme: Play for Humanity, Sport and Music for All.

An Expo is not a three-day trade fair: fit-out starts in December 2026, the show runs for 93 days, and the space must be cleared by 15 November 2027.

who fits out the pavilions, and where companies fit in

Official participants are countries and international organisations. Individual pavilions stand in seven halls and come in three sizes: small 324 m2, medium 648 m2 and large 972 m2, with a mezzanine allowed. Each participant fits out its individual pavilion through a contractor it chooses. The larger countries tendered design, build and equipment as one package, and the contractors who won now buy the equipment.

The other countries share collective pavilions that the organiser designs, builds and fits out. Each gets about 100 m2 and brings its own content and exhibits. The organiser also builds the Best Practice and Corporate Area through its own contractors, and its partner benefits list reserves a company-built corporate pavilion for Platinum Partners.

A company therefore reaches the Expo through its country's programme, as a partner of the organiser, or as a supplier to the teams fitting out the pavilions; space is not rented by the square metre as at a trade fair. As Octanorm's general representative for Slovenia and the Adria region, Serbia and North Macedonia included, we sell the original Octanorm system to anyone fitting out an interior: profiles and walls, MAXIMA, OctaLumina light frames and counters.

  • Individual pavilion: fitted out by the participant through its contractor.
  • Collective pavilion: built and fitted out by the organiser, countries bring content.
  • Best Practice and Corporate Area: built by the organiser; own pavilions for Platinum Partners.
  • Companies: their country's programme, a partnership with the organiser, or supply to contractors.

what serbian rules require inside a pavilion

In May 2026 the Serbian government adopted a decree on placing and removing participant pavilions (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia 45/2026). Under it a pavilion is a temporary exhibition structure inside a hall, planned and paid for by the participant. The participant, as the investor, files a conceptual design with a named lead designer and licence numbers on every drawing, in Serbian and with a qualified electronic signature. A temporary building permit is then issued for the build.

The decree lists seven basic requirements, among them mechanical resistance and stability, fire safety, and the reuse or recyclability of the pavilion and its materials. A modular aluminium system meets the last one by design: the parts are taken apart after the Expo and used again.

Because the design must be signed by a designer licensed in Serbia, foreign contractors usually work with a Serbian partner. Ask your supplier for the technical documentation of the components and for the reaction-to-fire class of each material under SRPS EN 13501-1. The participant clears the space at its own cost by 15 November 2027, so how fast the equipment comes down, and where it goes next, matters too.

  • Design: licensed lead designer, in Serbian, electronically signed.
  • Permit: a temporary building permit from the ministry.
  • Requirements include stability, fire safety and reuse of materials.
  • Removal: at the participant's cost, by 15 November 2027.

buying a system for the expo: the equipment stays yours

An Expo is not a three-day trade fair: fit-out starts in December 2026, the show runs for 93 days, and the space must be cleared by 15 November 2027. The equipment is tied up for almost a year, which makes buy versus rent a different sum from a fair that lasts a few days.

A system you buy stays yours. After the Expo it goes home and works at your trade fairs and in your own showrooms; for the next show you add graphics or the parts you are missing. Octanorm has been made since 1969 to one standard, so parts from different years fit together and a layout can grow later.

We sell the original systems: Octanorm classic for walls and shell stands, MAXIMA for large and tall builds, OctaLumina light frames, counters, OCTArig for overhead structures and OCTAmax for mezzanines. For your floor plan we prepare a layout and a parts list, so you know exactly what you are buying.

  • Suited to: pavilion teams, contractors and companies who will use the system after the Expo.
  • What you buy: profiles and walls, MAXIMA, OctaLumina, counters, OCTArig, OCTAmax.
  • What comes with it: a layout and parts list for your floor plan.
  • Sustainability: the system comes apart and is used again, one of the basic requirements of the Serbian pavilion decree.

customs and vat for equipment entering serbia

Serbia and the BIE signed an agreement on the privileges and benefits for taking part in EXPO 2027, which eases imports for official participants. Each participant has a temporary legal entity in Serbia, its section commissioner's office, which can import goods for the pavilion free of customs duty and VAT with a PPExpo2027 certificate issued by the organiser.

The relief holds while the goods serve the Expo. They may not be sold or used commercially in Serbia without paying duty and VAT, and temporarily imported goods must leave the country by 31 December 2027. For goods and services bought in Serbia to build, run and dismantle a pavilion, the participant claims a VAT refund.

A purchased system therefore comes to the Expo, goes home after closing and keeps working there. Anyone who wants to leave it in Serbia pays duty and VAT at that point. Check the details of your own case with a customs broker before you order.

  • Imports by official participants: no duty or VAT, with a PPExpo2027 certificate.
  • Sale or use in Serbia after the Expo: duty and VAT apply.
  • Re-export: by 31 December 2027.
  • Purchases in Serbia: VAT refund on goods and services for the pavilion.

timeline: what is still possible before opening

The organiser has said all pavilion units will be ready for handover by 1 December 2026. Under the participants' guide the interior must be finished by 31 March 2027 and the exhibits installed by 30 April, followed by testing and the opening on 15 May.

If you buy a system for the Expo, the design has to be approved and the equipment available before fit-out starts. With fit-out running from December to March, the decisions are being made now, in autumn 2026. We state the delivery time for your parts list in the quote.

Belgrade Fair holds several shows before the Expo where a purchased system can work first: the furniture and equipment fair (12 to 16 November 2026), the tourism and hospitality equipment fair (25 to 28 February 2027), the construction fair (20 to 23 April 2027) and the technology fair (10 to 13 May 2027).

  • By 1 Dec 2026: pavilion units handed over to participants.
  • December 2026 to March 2027: interior fit-out.
  • 31 Mar 2027: interior finished.
  • 30 Apr 2027: exhibits installed.
  • 15 May to 15 Aug 2027: EXPO 2027.
  • By 15 Nov 2027: removal and handback of the space.
  • By 31 Dec 2027: re-export of temporarily imported equipment.

rental, turnkey builds and how to get a quote

Rental remains the right choice for a single show, for example one of the Belgrade fairs before the Expo: you get a stand built and hand it back afterwards. A turnkey build makes sense when you want design, production and installation from one supplier. For an Expo pavilion the design is signed by a designer licensed in Serbia and the build is run by the participant's contractor; we supply the system and prepare the parts list.

For a quote, send a floor plan or the size of the space, the type of presence (pavilion, shared space or trade fair) and your deadline. We return a layout, a parts list and a purchase price, and a rental price for comparison where rental makes sense.

  • One trade fair: rent.
  • A pavilion or several shows: buy the system.
  • Design and build from one supplier: turnkey.

frequently asked questions

From 15 May to 15 August 2027, 93 days, in Surčin next to Belgrade airport, on 25 hectares. More than 140 countries and international organisations have confirmed, and the organiser expects over four million visitors.

The organiser builds the halls, the pavilion units and the collective pavilions. Participants fit out their individual pavilions through contractors, often chosen by public tender. We sell the Octanorm system to those contractors and teams.

A company-built pavilion in the corporate area is reserved for the organiser's Platinum Partners. Other companies take part through their country's programme, as partners of the organiser or at Expo business events, and many exhibit at the Belgrade fairs before and after the Expo.

Under the participants' guide the interior must be finished by 31 March 2027 and the exhibits installed by 30 April 2027. After closing, the space must be cleared by 15 November 2027.

Yes, if you buy it. Equipment an official participant imports free of duty and VAT must leave Serbia by 31 December 2027, otherwise duty and VAT are due. A purchased system then keeps working for you at trade fairs at home and abroad.

Rental is built for short shows. At the Expo the equipment is tied up for almost a year, from fit-out in December 2026 to removal in November 2027, so compare rental for that whole period with buying, and with what the system is worth to you afterwards. We prepare the calculation for your case.

There is no official price list for equipment; the organiser sets only the space and the rules. The price depends on the floor area, the system, lighting and graphics. Send a floor plan and we will prepare a parts list with a price.

Official participants are countries and organisations, so a company starts with the agency running its country's pavilion. A partnership with the organiser starts with a letter of intent to komercijalizacija@expobelgrade2027.org. Serbian companies can join the Expo business platform, where participants pick fit-out associates from December 2026.
